Excursions from Marseille

We will be staying in Marseille for several weeks in July. We are interested the %26quot;must sees%26quot; outside of the city for short excursions that are accessible by public transportation (trains/buses). Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Cassis, accesible either by train or by bus but I recommend doing it by bus leaving Castellane-Prado stop. The view is some times spectacular especially when the bus climbs upotowards the corniche and the view over Cap Canaille just before arriving Cassis. The bus gets you in the center a few min walk to the beach/port, Cassis Gendarmerie (Police). Tain may be a little more frequent than bus but Cassis train station is unfortunately 2-3 kilometers from the center and shuttle bus between the station and the center was so infrequent, I had to walk. Also the train runs behind the corniche so there is not much to see. The bus may have been even twice less expensive (ca.2,5€ vs 4.5 €)

I should second what kat1 says about Cassis, a wonderful place to visit. Additionally you may check into taking a boat tour of the coastline. The Office de Tourisme should have the necessary details and this simple excursion is often overlooked yet can be quite memorable.

Thank you for the information! Everything sounds wonderful! Would we have to book the boat excursion well in advance or could we do that when we are then in mid July?

You can buy the ticket most usually on the spot.
