I am a single female traveller who will be in Paris for a long weekend in July. I am looking for a cheap hotel or hostel to stay in - however safety is very important since I am travelling alone. I noticed there are a lot of budget accomodations in the Montmartre area....however i have heard this is not the best area for safety, especially at night and especially for women.
Can anyone give me some advice? Should I pay more to stay in the Latin Quarter or are the hostels/budget hotels in Montmartre going to be suitable for me?
Any help is appreciated!!!! Thank you.

If you choose a hotel north of Bldv. de Clichy - that is up on the hill itself there will be absolutely no problems.
(And I msut add: even if you do stay around the so called %26quot;red light district%26quot; there are no problems. The professional girls mind their own business, this is not a %26quot;criminal%26quot; area, you don%26#39;t get knocked on your head - and if you don%26#39;t like the look of adult shops with adult toys - just look the other way).
You will enjoy the hill so much, Montmartre is really old-world Paris and has tons of the old village-charm. And it is so wonderful to retire to Montmartre and its peace and quiet in the evening when you return from the bustle of all the mid-city sights, traffic and myriads of (other) tourists.
Both on Rue Lepic and on Rue des Abbesses there are so many nice and cozy restaurants.
Hotels to consider (depending on your budget) is:
Hotel Utrillo
Hotel du Moulin
(both in Rue Aristide Bruant, sidestreet to Rue des Abbesses)
Hotel Prima-Lepic
Ermitage Hotel
All these hotels are reviewed here on TA.
I stayed in Hotel du Moulin as a single woman last summer and walked home from both metro Blanche and metro Abbesses in the night without a care in the world.

And if you do not believe what I write: take a look at these photos.
ps. well, I lied a little about the non-crime area.
If you go to Place du Tertre (which you must if you are a Paris first-timer, you will be %26quot;robbed%26quot;...... in restaurants when they hand you the bill !)

Thanks for your input, it helps a lot!

Last year I (single female traveller) also did not know where to stay for a long weekend in Paris. And when i asked my colleague who is French and lived in Paris for 25 years whether it is safe to stay in Montmartre area, she said, yes, it is more or less ok, however (i) there are many strip-bars and strip-dicso there, and (ii) it is a bit far from the central part, so, in order to feel 100% safe and comfort you have to be in the hotel at least at 9pm (which was not good for me, because it was my very first time in paris and i wanted to see as much as possible). I managed to live in Flor Rivoli Hotel which is in the 1 district, very close to metro station. The hotel is budget (i paid 70 Euros for double room single occ), and rather simple, but everything was clean and nice. When I visited Montmartre during the day, frankly speaking, i was happy that i did not stay there, because otherwise i would not feel 100% comfort and safe there.

I have to disagree with Vanda, Montmartre is no more of a safety concern than the 1st, 4th, 5th, or 6th (the most popular) arrondisments, maybe less so. It%26#39;s a charming and exciting place and much more historically Parisian than any other district. You should put Montmartre high on your list. I love Montmartre.

I would still be very specific about where in %26quot;Montmartre%26quot; this budget lodging is located. Avoid if very east or northeast of Sacre Coeur, near the rail tracks or the peripherique.
If near metro Abbesses or Lamarck-Caulaincourt, then good - this is the part of %26quot;Montmartre%26quot; that most people mean.
by the way, have you looked at Hotel de Nesle in the 6th, near the Seine? or Hotel Tiquetonne in the 2nd, very popular ?

I agree with the other posts. Montmarte is great, but you must use the same amount of caution you would in any large city. Bear in mind too, that there must be a distinction made between Pigalle (9th arr) and Montmartre (18th). The two tend to get lumped together and Pigalle can be an area that many people associate with seediness/crime.

We returned from Paris a few weeks ago, and here is a pic I took as we walked south from Sacre Coeur towards Pigalle and the Moulin Rouge. It seemed pretty representative of the streets we were going through, albeit one of the smaller ones. There are also the big avenues, full of shops, etc.

This area is a bit away from the Seine and the sights elsewhere, though, but if you get familiar with the metro system it doesn%26#39;t take long to get to any of the other places.

French men are french men, sometimes impossible, but I have never felt unsafe in Paris so I think that you without problem can stay in Montmartre, even though I think i would have choosen another location, closer to cool bars and nightclubs.

Melissa %26amp; I hit Paris the day after Thanksgiving for nine nights.
The best day for me was my last full day (Sat Dec 03, 2005). I did my own thing with the Frommer%26#39;s Guide Book Walking Tour #1 Montmartre
(Moulin Rouge %26amp; Sacre Coeur neighbourhoods)
