Overwhelmed with choosing a hotel

I%26#39;m sure this posting is by no means original, but I%26#39;m hoping to get help in choosing a hotel in Paris. I%26#39;ll try to be as specific as possible...

I%26#39;ll be arriving in Paris early May 12, 2006 (Friday) and leaving the 20th in the afternoon. I%26#39;m hoping to find an inexpensive hotel for the first 7 days, and then splurge on a nice hotel the last two nights. So recommendations on both inexpensive and slightly more luxurious are welcome.

I%26#39;m not opposed to staying at a mom-and-pop type of place, but I really prefer having my own bathroom.

Accessibility to transportation is a must, as I don%26#39;t plan to rent a car. Do most hotels offer airport shuttle?

I want to get to know Paris (as much as I can in 9 days, LOL) so I%26#39;ll be going to the popular attactions, but also just want to hang around the %26quot;road less traveled%26quot;. I%26#39;m going with my girlfriend, we%26#39;re both in our mid-twenties. Would be nice to stay in a lively area, but I%26#39;m not too much of a party girl so I don%26#39;t NEED to be around clubs and bars.

On a side note, I%26#39;d be curious to know if there is a %26quot;gay-friendly%26quot; area in Paris (similar to %26quot;the village%26quot; in NY). Don%26#39;t need to stay there, just would be curious to visit while I%26#39;m there.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. There are just too many hotels in hotels.com, expedia, bookingbuddy etc. and I%26#39;m feeling a bit overwhelmed.

Thanks!

I stayed at Hotel Sainte-Marie in the 2nd arrondissment. It was cheap (48 euros) for single person with shower and bathroom. The hotel was very clean, and the staff friendly and spoke good English. It%26#39;s just a one star hotel, so one can%26#39;t expect much. But it%26#39;s cheap and clean and has it%26#39;s own shower...and if you are sightseeing all day and just using the hotel for sleep, this hotel was more than enough for me. Oh and it%26#39;s very close to the metro.

And if you really want to splurge into a very nice hotel after that book the Meurice which isn%26#39;t too far away!

You%26#39;ll probably find that the neighborhoods of the 3eme-upper-Marais and just across the line into the 11eme-Republique most like the neighborhoods of lower-Manhattan (East and West Village, SOHO, Tribeca, et al) and probably the most G/L/B-friendly. But for the most part, you really won%26#39;t find the rest of the %26#39;core%26#39; of central Paris G/L/B-un-friendly either. It%26#39;s pretty much a non-issue. But for more specific information you might want to check out some of the G/L/B-specific travel sites.

Thanks everyone, this is helpful. :-)

By the way, has anyone heard of/stayed at the Hôtel Jeanne d%26#39;Arc, le Marais? This was one of the %26quot;on a budget%26quot; recommendations in a Lonely Planet Paris book I bought. hotels.parishotels.com/hotel-direct.php…

I was also recommended the Hotel Paris Rivoli, by my gf%26#39;s cousin

tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g187147-d230461…

I really like the Beaumarchais, but I think $130/nite is more than what I%26#39;d like to spend (for the cheaper hotel).

Thnx.

I stayed at the Hotel Sainte-Marie (www.hotelsaintemarie.com) too, some years back. They seem to have lowered their (already low) prices! Central location, within walking distance of Printemps/Galeries Lafayette, Cinema Rex.

Service was a bit curt, but that could have to do with the fact that I was transfered there by another hotel that was overbooked. Hotels in this class don%26#39;t offer airport shuttle services - but metro or RER may help. Close to metro stop %26quot;Bonne Nouvelle%26quot;.

Get acquainted with the metro system: www.ratp.fr

If you know how that works, it will help a lot. There are a lot of threads on this forum about the Carte Orange (not explained in english on the RATP site) - check them out too!

Hey there pixiegirl729....did you end up at the Hotel Jeanne d%26#39;Arc, le Marais that you were inquiring about? An Austrian friend of mine recommended it based on only a visit to check it out...she didn%26#39;t actually stay there....I%26#39;m going to Paris in September....for a week....any other recommendations? If you want to e-mail me at jakespop@hotmail.com I%26#39;d love to hear about your trip.....Chuck M
