How do I know which area to stay in? Can someone tell me what is a good budget for food?

Well you are lucky to find this board, there are many many posts here that will help you. Read the first three or four pages.
Declare your hotel budget( it is a big help if we know what you are specifically looking for).
Are you walking a lot, do you like quiet or noisey and busy, and are you travelling with a partner , with children , alone?
A food budget is subjective, do you want cheap, or deluxe? It is possible to eat very cheap or to blow hundreds on one meal.

I do plan to do most of my sightseeing on foot. But if I get too far out(or lost), I want to be able to get a taxi. From going over the board it seems that a hotel is either in the right area or left area. I am really looking for something that is user friendly and maybe no more than $180 a night. What sparked my trip to Paris is a friend%26#39;s pictures by the river. I just said instantly, I%26#39;m going! So if I could get a hotel by that river, I%26#39;d be very happy.

Lucky you.I was in the same %26#39;%26#39;%26#39;boat%26#39; as you till May 4th!I had a great time(first solo trip) -made even better by my lovely host who showed me his fave spots. I preferred HIM to any monument/place:)) Enjoy!

Hi Neverbeen,
I asked a similar question awhile back and some suggestions made to me were the hotels Les Rives De Notre Dame, Hotel le Notre Dame and any hotel over six stories with unobstructed views :)
Good luck!

We saye din two hotels in Paris. I also have relatives in anther area. I stayed in the 1 st arrondismont , too many tourist shops and not enough character for me, BUT, great views and close to Lourve.
I also stayed in the 5th, loved the area, lots of cheap eats , but road was a tad noisey( Boulevard St Michel a busy street) .
My relatives place is in the 7th. Nice area, but very quiet at night, not as many places to eat cheaply( athough of course there are some) .
Over all, I liked the Latin Quarter ( which I believe is the 4 th and 5th) and I would also love to stay on the Island by Notre Dame.
I used the hotel search on left hand side here, and it was very good, I found the price I wanted to pay, and the reviews were accurate to what I experienced. Remember when you read the reviews if one is different then all the others, then disregard that one usaully. Go with concensus. One hotel was about 200 euros a night( the one in the 1 st, Hotel Brighton) , the other was about 90( Hotel Des Mines) . They were both good value for what I recieved. The more exspensive one offered fourth night free, which then brought the price down to 160 a night.

Eating can be as cheap or as exspensive as you like. We were on a budget so stuck to cheap places, menus ( three courses) for under 20 euros a head , sometimes under 15!) . We also just snacked on street food during day, crepes were three or four euros, and we ate junk food from Monoprix etc. French cookies and yogurts , yum.
