We are staying in the 11th. However, we will have metro pass so will be fairly mobile. Our family is reasonably adventurous on food, so looking for preferably non touristy restaurants that won%26#39;t break bank for 5 people. Flexible on cuisine, but would like to eat some french. Also interested on suggestions on getting picnic type food from local mkts, street vendors etc. Thanks Steve

We stayed in the 11th (Place de la Republique) - right on the Place were two busy chain restaurants: Leon de Bruxelles (mussels the specialty and bottomless serving of fries) and Maitre Kanter. Both pretty reasonable and tasty and very busy places. There a lot of fast food places in that big square, too, including a McDonald%26#39;s.
We took a long stroll to C%26#39;Amelot which was very non-touristy (I think it is on rue Amelot) and reasonably priced.
Really liked the neighborhood!

I love L%26#39;Ace du Falafel in the 4th on the rue des Rosiers for cheap eats wholesome with the family.
Also go to rue Ste Anne in the 2nd for cheap Japanese noodle dishes fairly often.
For French, we like the Vin Sobre on the rue des Feuillantines in the 5th.

L%26#39;Ace du Falafel is really yummy! I%26#39;ll second that suggestion.
For picnic food try a local open air market. Here is a list of all the markets in Paris and operating days:

There%26#39;s a store near the Place de la Republique - at 48 rue de Malte - that we were excited to find because it is similar to a convenience store - stocks coca-cola, groceries, take-out stuff like salads, etc. I think it%26#39;s open until 11 p.m. It is called Monop and belongs to the group Monoprix (department store, of which there is also one near the Place.) I bought a coca cola black there (of course I had to save receipts from everything I bought on our trip!) for .95 euros and found that it did not have a screw top. Here%26#39;s the value of packing a bottle opener in addition to a corkscrew! Yes, I know you can buy both these things in Paris but not at 11 p.m. at night! (So the bar of our hotel had to open the bottle for me.)
Of the Monop - best thing is perusing the shelves in search of French junk food. There is such a thing.
