I will be traveling with two other people via train this July and we would like to make a stop in Provence. I know there is a huge festival in Avignon at this time, so finding a place to stay will probably be difficult, so we are also thinking Arles and maybe Isle-sur-la-sorgue? I believe these are all easily accessible by train. We will be coming from the Geneva area and would like a small, beautiful typically Provencal town to stay in for two nights that will be easy for train travel and will give us a small taste of the Provencal way of life. From there we will be headed to Collioure and down to Barcelona.
Any suggestions on which town to stay in? I%26#39;d greatly appreciate some help!

Avignon and Arles are not %26quot;small , beautiful typically Provencal towns%26quot;, but rather more urban in feel; I doubt itf Isle sur la Sorgue is on a major train line. It is charming, with a wonderful market, but two nights would be more than you need (a day trip would be enough). I%26#39;d opt for Aix-en Provence, which is also a small city, but is beautiful, and has a wonderful music festival in the summer. Avignon has more of interest sightseeing-wise (Palais des Papes, etc.) than does Arles.

Or if you want a smaller town, and it%26#39;s accessible by train, I%26#39;d pick St.Remy.

Isle-sur-la-sorgue is actually accessible by one of the smaller trains, runs a couple times a day from Avignon. Of course it doesn%26#39;t seem like the most convenient trip though. I will look into aix-en-provence. We were going to go to Avignon, but there is a film festival at that time and finding a nice place to stay is a bit of a struggle. Thanks for your ideas.

emiliana,
One of our favorite towns is Isle sur la Sorques - very busy on Sunday with a popular street market. There is not too much to do there but people watch from the many bars, restaurants etc so two days might be a little long.
Would you be able to hire a car as there are some lovely little villages easily accessable from Avignon by car?
I don%26#39;t think you will have too much trouble finding a hotel in Avignon but watch the dates because the French annual holidays start in the end of July and it always seems that the whole of France takes to the road and heads south - this is more likely to cause an accommodation problem.
Have a nice trip.

For a smaller town and MUCH better rail connections than l%26#39;Isle-sur-la-Sorgue take a look at Tarascon. It%26#39;s on the Rhône, half way between Arles and Avignon. Has good hotels and restaurants, and a splendid medieval castle overlooking the Rhone.
Also there has been a recent longish thread on getting from Avignon to Collioure and Barcelona. You might want to check it out.
Good luck!

Thanks for your advice. I%26#39;ve been having trouble finding places to stay in isle-sur-la-sorgue, any suggestions?

Sorry we have never looked for short term accommadation in Isle su la Sorque.
You might try www.gitesdefrance.com or www.cheznous.co.uk
Both offer self contained house/appartment accommodation which are privately owned but they usually like a weeks rental.
Best suggestion would be to stay in Avignon and use train to visit.
Good luck
