Restaurant open on Sunday evenings?

We are celebrating a 50th birthday in Paris in July. However, The birthday is on a Sunday and we have been told that there is limited choice of restaurants open on Sunday evenings.

Can anyone recommend a restaurant in the Champs Elysses or Opera area which is open on Sundays evenings for a family meal?

We had been recommended La Chinoisserie restaurant (which is within the Hyatt Hotel Madeleine) as a good choice for a celebration meal, but have had feedback giving bad reviews.

Thanks

Cafe de la Paix is a large historic restaurant that was once plagued with tourists, but has now become fashionable again.

Aux Lyonnnais is another good restaurant in that area, but I am not sure if it is open on Sundays.

What about the restaurants in some of the higher end hotels i.e. George V, Crillion, etc.?

The hotel suggestion is a good one. I absolutely loved the restaurant at the Sheraton at CDG! Not festive enough for a birthday, though... for that you need to be able to stroll outside and see Paris.

I use www.cityvox.fr to narrow down choices for restaurants. They have a screening tool that allows you to select by different variables and then you peruse the list and read the reviews and information for each restaurant and see what you think. Unfortunately, the information from the reviews is usually in French and the presentation which is a thumbnail sketch of the place is usually also in French! So grab a dictionary or a friend who speaks French if you want to find out more - or search this forum with the name of the each restaurant!

I went to cityvox and put French (the type of food), Sunday (the feature I was looking for), and chose the 8th arrondissement (the Champs Elysees area). It spit back 82 places. To find out if it is open on a Sunday night, you have to look at a restaurant%26#39;s %26#39;Practical information%26#39; which is one of the tabs to its entry. After all, the category was %26#39;Sunday%26#39; but they don%26#39;t have a %26#39;Sunday night.%26#39;

Anyway, the list can then be sorted by marks - which means the highest-stars-awarded restaurants will be at the top of the list. True, maybe the restaurant with 6 stars only had one opinion published while further down the list, a 5 starred restaurant had 17. Well, just keep that in mind! (If you sort by %26#39;opinions%26#39; you get the places that people decided to submit reviews for with the most opinions submitted coming up first.)

The top of the list restaurant was La Cour Jardin du Plaza Athenee, a hotel restaurant. In the practical information, I saw that it is open from May to September. There is a dress code. It is the Garden Court of the Hotel so it is a terrace. It seats 50. It is open Sundays from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. and from 8:00 to 10 p.m.

Next on the list was Minim%26#39;s which is described as a brasserie de luxe, a bistro with 70 seats, romantic and trendy. It was described as the mini-Maxim%26#39;s. Hours on Sunday: 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Next, La Table du Lancaster which is in the Lancaster hotel. Wonderful food, according to the reviewers, who also noted that %26#39;American is spoken by everyone%26#39; there. Sunday from 7:30-11:30 p.m.

Les Ambassadeurs is next with 40 seats in the Hotel de Crillon.

Then Garnier which got high praise for its fish dishes.

Followed by:

Hotel de Vigny

Restaurant du Rond-Point

Toi

Pierre Gagnaire

Devez

L%26#39;Obelisque

I really didn%26#39;t look at the restaurants after the Garnier. For one thing, if you are interested in actually looking at the restaurants listed in cityvox with their reviews, you are also going to be interested in the other bits of information offered for each restaurant. This includes: prices (they are listed but I would double check the website if the restaurant has one - and usually hotels have info on their websites), whether there is a dress code, what credit cards they take (also listed in the practical information) and what other categories the restaurant falls under (listed in the practical information, I believe...)

Le Music Hall is also in this list and it is open Sunday but I cannot decipher its hours. It is open from 10 to 2 (can that be 2 a.m.?) I%26#39;m sure it has a website too and looks quite interesting!

By the way, most restaurants have a picture, too but I think Le Music Hall had several! I think it has a piano and music while you dine on the ground floor (if I remember correctly).

Good Luck! That was the 8th, the area of the Champs Elysees. I think Opera is in the 9th, which would require a new search.

If you do a search on this website for cityvox, you%26#39;ll most likely see my name come up a few times. In one entry, I tried to explain how to use cityvox - it can be unwieldy, although the more I use it, the easier it gets.

People%26#39;s personal experiences are the best testaments to a restaurant%26#39;s value. I most enjoy reading the opinions on cityvox in which a reviewer absolutely trashes a restaurant. The reviewers tend to be French and they tend to be very passionate about dining.

Entertaining reading!

Hotel De Vginy%26#39;s restaurant Barretto is lovely, very stylish with good food and service.

Some other suggestions: Pinxo at Rennaisance Paris Vendome; not traditional but great food inspired by Alain Dutournier.

Fouquet%26#39;s main restaurant(decorated by Jacques Garcia) has a very nice ambiance. Hotel Daniel%26#39;s restaurant seems quite nice too.

See if your local library has a copy of the Michelin Guide to France (or Paris)--there%26#39;s a 2-page section listing restaurants open on Sundays. One that many people have recommended is Mon Viel Ami, in the 4th.
