Irish, since you were kind enough to refer his Seven Ages of Paris, I wanted to tell you that I came across the paperback version of his book called %26quot;La Belle France%26quot;.
I didn%26#39;t have time to look it over much except to see the cover but will check it out next time I%26#39;m at Borders.
If you%26#39;ve read it, let me know how you enjoyed it.

What a coincidence! I just received a copy of the hard cover edition as a birthday gift a few weeks ago. I haven%26#39;t started to read it yet, but I%26#39;m very much looking forward to it.
I was entertained by the epigraph to the first chapter, Anne of Kiev writing of France in 1051: %26quot;A barbarous country where the houses were gloomy, the churches ugly, and the customs revolting.%26quot;
Thanks for thinking of me, and for the recommendation. I%26#39;ll toss one back to you. I am currently reading %26quot;Suite Française%26quot; by Irène Némirovsky. It%26#39;s a novel, or rather two of what was intended to be five novellas, about France under the Nazi occupation. Stunning writing and a very good translation. The fact that they exist at all is amazing. Némirovsky was deported to Auschwitz in the summer of 1942 and died in the gas chambers a month later.
I hope you will pick up a copy.

Irish.... I recently read an article about Suite Francaise and thought it looked interesting. You%26#39;ll have to let me know how it goes. I also haven%26#39;t read Seven Ages yet (decided on a Marie Antoinette bio to start next) and now there%26#39;s La Belle France? Oy, I%26#39;ll need a life time just to read about France let alone discover it for myself. :)

Irish, I just finished 7 Ages due to your recommendation. A most interesting read. I was rather impressed with the manner in which the history of a city was told in an engaging way. I%26#39;ll try LBF next. I was just given a copy of %26quot;Paris in the Fifties%26quot;. I don%26#39;t remember the author. Have you read it?

Thank you Irish, let me know how you like this one when you get around to reading it.

Trauffaut, I believe Stanly Karnow wrote the %26quot;Paris in the Fifties%26quot; book
