As a single person (26 years ago) I could tour Europe using a %26quot;Eurailpass%26quot;---I was very mobile (1 suitcase)---I could stay in inexpensive, small, but nice hotels or bed %26amp; breakfast---except for needing to be at the airport for the scheduled return flight home, I did not need to keep to any pre-set schedule (max. flexability). OK, now I have a family ---wife and 2 daughters (19 yrs %26amp; 21 yrs old).
I would like to try a family tour of Europe (perhaps a 21 day tour). Can a family tour Europe and have some flexability of schedule (I am thinking of using EurrailPass again). Realistically, I know that traveling with a total of 4 people is going to hinder mobiliity, thrift, and flexability. Especially difficult will be convincing my wife to travel light (e.g., 1 suitcase). PLEASE, help ---give me some suggestions about affordable, flexable family travel within Europe. Can it be done or attempted? Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated (e.g. guildebooks, pitfalls, is Eurrail still a good idea, round-trip airfare, place that are a must for a family, etc.). Hopefully, your local library has Rick Steeves%26#39; %26quot;Europe Through The Back Door%26quot;. Check it out and have your family read it. It is worth buying to get them in the frame of mind you have for your trip. Your biggest challenge is accomodating everyone%26#39;s must do%26#39;s without exhausting yourselves racing from place to place.
I hope it all works out for you.

Your %26quot;children %26quot; are adults, tell them they will carry everything they pack, and tell them budget hotels often are without elevators.
Then stick to that . NO helping them sclepp there stuff around.
I would think that for four adults one of the cheapest options is renting a car, actually, leasing would be the best option, but I am not sure what the minimum time is for that.
Trains are not cheap , and niether are those passes.
Have fun and read , read , read, I also recomment the Rick Steves books, but, more importantly have your kids research and tell them that you expect them to have suggestions and / or even plan one leg of trip. I did this with my 14 yr old son, I told him since I was paying and doing 99 % of the work, I expected him to do the research and come up with ideas of places he wanted to see!
He suggested Versailles as they had just finished doing the revolutions in school , and the Catacombs, which of course are morbid enough to interest the average 1 4 yr boy!
