local wines in provence

Hi everyone,

We are staying in Merindol, a small village just north of Aix-en-Provence in last two weeks of June and first week of July. We have heard that there are lots of local wines that you can buy in farms, vineyards, etc. Do any of you have any special favourites that you would recommend? A friend of mine recommended buying one of those large containers and filling it up at one of these places. Any suggestions?

Hi

Visit Val Joannis vineyard, you are around 25 minutes from it. Most wine cooperatives sell %26quot;loose %26quot; wine, around a euro per litre and usually very drinkable.

Draft wine or %26quot;en vrac%26quot; is the best way to buy but the wine has to be drunk fairly quickly as it tends to oxidise - this always gives us a certain impetus to drink it!

We are very fond of the local pink wine - from the Cotes du Rhone area which is to the north west of Merindol - if you like wine you might think of a trip to Chateauneuf do Papes and a wine tour - clearly marked - sampling before buying - both the caves at Beaumes de Venise and Vacqueyras have a wide selection of local wine both en vrac and bottled to taste and buy.

In the area you are staying there are lots of wine producers all clearly sign posted. The wine of this area in the Cotes de Aix is good but we still prefer the Cotes du Rhone.

Have fun

The wine village of Gigondas has an excellent tasting room, offering wines from local vintners.
