Driving from Nice to Beaune

Wondering if anyone can recommend a nice and scenic route (perhaps through wine country?) from Nice to Beaune?

Are you going to make the drive in just one day? It%26#39;s fairly long and won%26#39;t really leave you much time for scenic routes. If you can manage a day and a half, with an overnight stop, you could see some of the lower Rhône vineyards on the first day-- Beaumes-de-Venise, Vacqueras, Gigondas--and do some tasting along with enjoying the countryside and picturesque villages. You could then spend the night somewhere in the Drôme region, perhaps near Nyons (famous for its appellation-controlée olives) before continuing your journey toward Beaune on the following morning.

As Underhill has implied, the quickest route takes you past (but not really through) wine country for much of the distance up the Rhône valley to Lyon and beyond that through the Maconnais to Beaune. But it%26#39;s not a spectacularly scenic route, though some of it is lovely, and unless you take a couple of days you won%26#39;t really be able to make many detours off the Autoroute.

There is a magnificent scenic route, for which you would absolutely have to take two days, but it isn%26#39;t through wine country. It goes through Grenoble, Annecy and Geneva, basically starting out along the Route Napoléon (N85) and then heading north through the Alps.

It%26#39;s not really much (if any) longer in terms of sheer distance than the fast route, but it is a lot slower as you would want to stay off the Autoroutes to make the most of it, and there are some seriously hilly and twisty bits. But it is worth it, IMO.

You could shorten it by heading north-west from Annecy, avoiding Geneva, and picking up the Autoroute to take you to Macon and then to Beaune

If you think you%26#39;d be interested, post back and I%26#39;ll detail the route for you.

We may need to reconsider taking the train as we did want to spend as much time as possible in Beaune and thought it might be nicer to drive rather than sit on the train for 8hrs.

Thanks for your messages!

But the car will be useful in the Beaune area. If the time is a concern, you could take the autoroute from Nice to Beaune in about 5 to 6 hours.
