Pretty villages / towns within 30 mins drive of Bordeaux?

Hi - we%26#39;re flying into bordeaux on 1st July for a week

We%26#39;d like to hire a gite near bordeaux in a pretty village or town that has a few restaurants that we could walk to. Can anyone reccommed some really pretty towns?? Merci!

This is a tricky one. To understand why, do a Google search for %26quot;Les Plus Beaux Villages de France%26quot; and go to their web site.

Les Plus Beaux Villages is an association which identifies and awards a certification to villages that are particularly picturesque, lovely, charming, etc. throughout the country. There are 148 of them; none are in the Bordeaux region (Gironde).

This region has a lot of pluses, but beautiful villages are not among them. Were you staying for just a night, I might recommend a couple of places that might do in a pinch, but by the end of a week you%26#39;d be climbing the walls. The closest that you get to a truly charming town around here would be Saint-Emilion, which has some very good restaurants--and tons of crowds in July.

Your best bet for what you%26#39;re looking for might be next door in the Dordogne region. You can still get over to visit Saint-Emilion on a day trip, and there are plenty of great vineyards in Bergerac to see.

Of course, this is just my opinion. There may be others on this list that may be able to give you the name of a hidden jewel of a village in the area that I know nothing about. I hope there are; it would be very good to know about. And please let us know if you have found anything.
