One Day in Paris

I%26#39;m going to be in Oxford for business at the end of July and will have an opportunity to travel by train from London to Paris for the day. I%26#39;d love to see the Louvre, but I understand that one could spend more than a WEEK there! Any suggestions for ONE day in Paris? I%26#39;d appreciate any information anyone can share, including how to get to the Louvre, where to have lunch, etc. Thanks!!

we did a weekend in paris and were overwhelmed by all the amazing and wonderful choices of how to spend a day. i really felt spending the money on the %26#39;hop on/hop off%26#39; bus tour was worth it. you get nice narration and a good look at all the monuments.

as for the louvre - there are so many amazing museums in paris, you can%26#39;t go wrong - if it is the first sunday of the month - admission is free. but how can you go wrong even if you only have an hour?

i know i would be disappointed if i went and didn%26#39;t walk in the door to see the venus de milo or the mona lisa or the winged victory...

Hubby and I had an entire week in Paris...and never felt we had enough time (and energy!) on any given day to devote to the Louvre...or the Musee D%26#39;Orsay.

Had I only one day in Paris, I would simply meander the streets and explore all the neighborhoods, shops, cafes, etc. I could. If I simply had to get a museum in (and I do understand the desire to do that), I would go to the Rodin Museum, especially on a pretty day....there are sculptures outside, and also sculptures, paintings, and informational displays inside--and it%26#39;s small enough that you can actually %26quot;do%26quot; the museum in a reasonable amount of time--also virtually no lines, at least when we were there! (As opposed to the lengthy lines at the Louvre and D%26#39;Orsay...and by the way, I heard that one could spend only two or three minutes, I believe it was, with each item in the Louvre and it would still take over a year of daily attendance to see every item!) A river cruise from Pont Neuf takes an hour and is a lovely way to get some history in a pleasant atmosphere. And if you%26#39;re in good shape, take the metro to Montmarte and climb the tower at Sacre Coeur for a stunning view of Paris--and without the lines at the Eiffel!

I assume you are travelling on the Eurostar train: this will terminate at Gare du Nord. From there I would take the RER train (fast subway) to Notre Dame / St Michel from where you can take a stroll along the banks of the Seine.

If you are set on the Louvre then take the RER train from Gare du Nord to Chatelet - just one station - and then take a walk to the museum. Alternatively a cab from Gare du Nord direct to the Louvre might be easier given your limited time.

Whatever you do I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll enjoy this most wonderful city.

We were outside the Louvre yesterday and it is huge, you would never get round it in a day, but just wander round outside, the grounds are lovely but the beer leaves a lot to be desired...

Kebabs - how long would that trip from Nord to the Louvre be? By train and by taxi. Thanks
