rue la fayette near Canal St Martin

I am thinking about staying in a apartment on Rue La Fayette near Louis Blanc Metro but am worried that the area might be a bit seedy at night. Last time we were in Paris we were near Montmartre in Rue Barbes and found it slightly unglamorous at night and wanted this time to stay where we could enjoy Paris by night a little easier. Does any one have any experience of this neighbourhood. The other place we are thinking of staying is near Ecole Militaire which would be more central, but the Rue La Fayette apartment is roomier for the same price. Any advice on the area would be appreciated

You sure know how to pick%26#39;em.....

I am not saying that you necessarily have to stay smack in the middle of Champs Elysées - because you can save a lot by avoiding the arrondissements closest to the Seine, BUT I would still go for something %26quot;in between%26quot; e.g. the 9th (La Nouvelle Athène), the 17th (Batignolles), the 14th (Montparnasse), maybe somewhere around Place de la République - and then of course the 18th Montmartre (on the west side of the Sacre Coeur).

You will be perfectly safe in Rue Lafayette - and I really love the Canal Saint Martin myself - but when you come all the way from Australia you cannot afford to gamble with something like your peace of mind.

Ecole Militaire is not more %26quot;central%26quot; - well, to the Eiffel Tower it is - but not in other aspects.
