Hello- My family will be cruising aboard the Carnival Liberty next month and one of the stops is Cannes, France. My husband and two sons are WWII buffs and want to see the beach of Normandy. Does anyone know if there is a train or bus that runs there from Cannes? If so, how long is the trip? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

It will be very compliacted.
Indeed, Cannes - Ouistreham (where the normandy beaches start) is not the most used railroad of France. However, you can take a train to Paris from Cannes (5 hours with thhe TGV via Marseilles), than a train to Caen in Normandy (2 hours). But beware of the connecting trains. If I were you, I would take the night train from Cannes to Paris (departure around 10 pm, arrival at about 8 pm) than the train to Caen (departure at about 9 am and arrival at anout 11 am). In Paris, you%26#39;ll have to change train station (Austerlitz to gare Saint-Lazare) and in Caen, you will have to take a bus.
Bon courage ! !

Its not exaclty an ideal trip. Cannes is on the South Coast of France, Normandy on the North Coast, about 1000km away. It kind of like a cruise docking in San Francisco and wanting to take a trip to LA!

The Carnival Cruise ship %26#39;..Liberty..%26#39; makes an 11 hour stop in Cannes on it%26#39;s Mediterranean cruise schedles. There%26#39;s no way you can get from Cannes on the Mediterranean, to Normandy on the Atlantic--approx 1,200km/750 mi) and back again in that amount of time.
If it is your intention to pay your respects to the fallen, you may do so at one the Rhone American cemetary %26amp; memorial at Draguignan located approx 20 mis. west of Cannes or the Sicily-Rome American cemetary %26amp; memorial near Rome (one of the stops on ytour cruise itinerary).

Do you know that there was an allied landing on 15th August 1944 in the South of France between Toulon and Cannes? It was named Operation Dragoon and led to the liberation of the South. The day is remembered every year with the laying of wreaths and in Cavalaire there is a large parade of the old military vehicles. If you follow this link you can find out more www.answers.com/topic/operation-dragoon.

Thanks for this info, my wife%26#39;s father was in the 36th Infantry Division, but I never knew the specific details of their landing in August 1944.
He does tell the story of being allowed on leave and staying at the Hotel Negresco in Nice! That is one of the few pleasant memories he has of WW2, his stories of the fighting in the Colmar pocket of the Vosges mountains in Alsace are terrible, awful stories. 60+ years later he still has occasional nightmares.

The 36th landed on %26quot;camel beach%26quot; which was St Raphael. I thnk all the beaches used have memorials of the landings.

Thanks so much to all of you for your suggestions. My son is extremely disappointed that he cant see Normandy, but i%26#39;m glad you gave a suggestion for an alternate place to pay respects.
I love this forum, I can always get the answers i need!
Thanks again all-

Perhaps you could plan a trip to Normandy for another time? Besides the landing beaches there%26#39;s much to see in the region, including Mont St-Michel and assorted castles.
