Terra Marina Bonifacio

Hi, We are hoping for a two week trip to Corsica in September with 1 week in Calvi followed by aweek in the south, perhaps Bonifacio. Anyone heard of Résidence Terra Marina, lieu-dit Bancarello 20169 Bonifacio? Is it recommended?

We are thinking of hotelling it in/around Calvi but not sure whether to stay slightly inland from Calvi but still within walking distance.

Any views would be very gratefully received!

Kind Regards

Stayed at the Terra Marina about 4 years ago and found it really delightful. Hospitable people, nice villas with more space than we expected, pleasant grounds and simply one of the best swimming pools I have ever seen. Not an enormous pool but with an infinity edge to it and a view down across to Bonifacio and its cliffs that is jaw-droppingly good.

It was an absolute pig to find, but that was before the days of Multimap and Maporama.

Thanks GeoffChall. That%26#39;s good new - I think we can class Bonifacio as sorted. Ill now do a bit more research for the week in Calvi so we can get it all booked!

Thanks again.

Hi GeoffChall, Hope you don%26#39;t mind me asking another couple of questions about Terra Marina before we go ahead and book? I would like an idea of it%26#39;s location in relation to Bonifacio - is it a short walk to the centre or better by taxi etc if so appox cost? We prefer to be located close to restaurants etc with just a stroll home in the evenings if possible. What did you think of the location overall? We are staying one week in Calvi and thsi would be our base for a week in the south. Do you think we should go with somewhere more central to Bonifacio or a different location completely?

Thanks very much in advance.

If you want to go via road to the town centre, it is nearly two miles because the route out takes you back to road in from Figari airport. You can also get traffic hassles because Bonifacio is one of the few places on the island with a serious traffic bottleneck. It%26#39;s not great to park in town either. I%26#39;m afraid I can%26#39;t help you with taxi rates - because I%26#39;m always a car hire man, but it can%26#39;t be too expensive.

But, if you come out of the front gate of the hotel and turn right, there is a footpath which takes you down to a flight of steps and thence down to 200 yards from the harbour. It used to take me less than 15 mins to walk down to get bread etc in the morning. Mind you it took longer to get back up!

So yes you could stay down in town, but it%26#39;s not essential unless you mind a bit of a walk.

And if you%26#39;re still looking in Calvi, you could try the St Erasme (10-15 mins walk out of town).

...as to another location? Well Bonifacio is very South - any further and you start speaking Italian. I wouldn%26#39;t stay in Bonifacio without a car because you won%26#39;t get to other places very readily without one.

Propriano is another possibility which gives you a greater circle of places to go to. It%26#39;s blessed with a lot more beachlife than Bonifacio and you could always go visit Bonifacio as a day trip but still be able to pull in other places to North, East and West.

Thanks again GeoffChall. Very kind of you to pass on the info.

Our plans so far are fly to Bastia 3rd Sept (booked) second week%26#39;s stay in St Christophe as strongly recommended here (booked) and we are now obviously deliberating over the south. We will hire a car for all or part of the trip but would really like to find the best place to be based and find good accomodation to. We are also looking at Hotel Centre Nautique which is closer to town. What would be your choice between the two? Would it be wiser to be in or slightly out of town? Or is Propriano the better option?

THANKS1

I%26#39;m afraid the answer lies with you and what you prefer. If you are aiming at relaxation. lounging by a pool, pottering to the beach and generally not doing a lot then I%26#39;d stick with Bonifacio. The Centre Nautique is down by the harbour (big surprise there then!) and is more in the town obviously, but I haven%26#39;t stayed there and certainly if we were in Bonifacio I%26#39;d go straight back to the Terra Marina without a second thought. The drawback is that Bonifacio is a cul de sac and to see anything more of the South you will have to spend time coming North to see other places.

So if you are people who want to get out and about, see and do things and get as much of the island in as you can, then I%26#39;d go to Propriano, because it would leave you closer to a range of other stuff and places that would still be accessible from Bonifacio but with an extra hour or so%26#39;s drive. It might mean you could get from Calvi to Propriano on your change-over day by going down the West coast through Porto and past Ajaccio, a long but worthwhile drive and tolerable if you could stop by Propriano. Afraid I can%26#39;t help re hotels in Propriano - always used a villa.

So - idle rest = Bonifacio. Itchy feet = Propriano.

Hope it helps!

GeoffChall again thanks very much. We have now booked Terra Marina but will spend some time at Propriano and get a feel of the place for future visits.

Kind Regards
