There is no such thing, as %26#39;most sights%26#39; are flung about within a 2-mile radius. How about telling us your %26quot;Top Ten%26quot; list then we could come up with hotels that are nearest most of your sights?
You might consider using the bus system ( you need a good map that shows the stops locations on the streets), and the occasional taxi to save your back.
I%26#39;m stupid about back-surgery - I would think you would -not- be able to walk so much....? Or do you mean you want to avoid the stairs in the metro as much as possible..?

Stay as close to the Seine as possible - if you have a problem with stairs, use the busses. The routes are described at the busstop-signs and in the busses there is a %26quot;next-stop sign%26quot; in the roof.
Hotels close to the Seine are e.g.

welcomehotel-paris.com/anglais/pagesA.html (I shall be staying there in July)
Use this site (%26quot;Paris Hotels%26quot; in the left column) to find hotels and read reviews, look for Latin Quarter, Louvre and St-Germain-des-Pres. You can even specify your budget
