We are looking for advice for a small town or village in which to stay in Burgundy in July. We%26#39;ll be taking the TGV and could stay in any place along the rail line. We would ideally like to stay in a quaint smallish hotel, and to be able to get to some vineyards.

Will you be renting a car? If not, and you want to visit some vineyards, how would you get there? There are wine tours from Dijon, which is a good-sized city, and Beaune, which is a decent-sized town, population about 25,000. The TGV does not stop at small towns or villages. (That is partly why it is the TGV.)
Reading between the lines of your post, which is always dangerous, I think Beaune is your only option.

Other options might be the little wine town of Montrachet or Macon. But Beaune is probably your best bet.

If you%26#39;ve no car, then you need a railway station - with that criterium, the only other places which comes to mind are Nuits St Georges and Meursault, but they don%26#39;t have a frequent service.

A useful site for small, individual hotels is http://www.logis-de-france.fr/uk/
That said, personally, I%26#39;d stay in Beaune!

Ditto - If you have no car, you should stay in Beaune. I recommend staying in the old town, which has the feel of a small village. You can%26#39;t get to wineries by train. But you can rent bicycles. There are wineries quite close to Beaune.

You can take the train to Macon, which is a pleasant little town.
Note that the TGV stops only at Dijon and one place in the middle of not much of anywhere; you%26#39;d need to take a regular train out of Dijon to go south.
Do you want to go wine-tasting at the vineyards? if so, there are some where you%26#39;ll need advance reservations, and most will not be accessible by train; probably you%26#39;ll need to check into buses. In Beaune, however, there are several wine-tasting rooms that offer a chance to try quite a few wines and vintages. Of the major châteaux, the one at Meurseult offers perhaps the best tasting experience, as you get to go down into the vast cellars and taste assorted vintages as you go through. The château at Savigny-lès-Beaune, a short trip from Beaune, has a good tasting room, and the wines are excellent.
A nice hotel that might be accessible by train from Beaune is the Meurseult. We also liked thehotel Les Maritonnes, in Romanèche-Thorins, but check to be certain it now has a/c. The huge pool is very nice.

Dear mr./mrs,
By coincedence I read your post on %26#39; trip advisor%26#39; that you are planning to go to Burgundy in July and are taking the TGV-train [from Paris?]. If you want to visit a small city and want to visit some vineyard or chateaux you could try to stay in Beaune. Beaune is the epi-centre of the Cote d%26#39;Or in the heart of the Burgundy-region or as the French say %26#39;dans la Bourgogne%26#39;. We%26#39;ve stayed there with friends several times during the fall when the grapes are harvested and visited the chateaux in the direct surroundings for some excellent wine-tasting. Just 10 minutes by car under Beaune is Meursault, worldfamous for it%26#39;s white wines and under Meursault are also some of the most famous villages renowned for their white whines.
The distance from Beaune to Meursault by car is approx. 10 minutes and by rental bike approx. 20 minutes. Nuits St. Georges, red Burgundy, is north of Beaune which is also a nice village. If you want to go whine-tasting try behind the church in Meursault of perhaps at the Chateau Meursault.
I hope you%26#39;ll enjoy France as much as we have done for the past years. Yours sincerely, Gerard
