I was thinking of doing a self guided tour of 7 chateaux including Ch. Margaux, Beychevelle, Raux, Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild.
Given that these wines (5 premier crus) are out of my price range and I will not be purchasing, is it worth going on tours of these chateaux or should I see other, more affordable, wineries? If the latter, can someone give some recommendations?

These châteaux are certainly well worth a visit. You do not indicate how many days you will be in the area and when you plan to be here, so you should know that getting into most of these classed-growth properties will require making appointments about 4-6 weeks in advance for the summer months (and many of them are closed to visits during the harvest season in September-October).
Don%26#39;t worry about having to purchase any wine at the end of the visit. The properties you have listed have salaried staff whose job is to take visitors around, so a purchase is not strictly necessary. (Also, a number of them such as Margaux and Lafite don%26#39;t even sell any wine at the château.)

We%26#39;ll be in Bordeaux for 4 days later this month -- I hope it%26#39;s not too late to get appts.
Thanks for your help!
