Will arrive at Gare Du Nord on a Thursday 4 pm, and our hotel is close to Vaugirard metro station. How much does a taxi cost for that trip? How easy is it to take Metro / PER with respect to luggage and stairs? Thanks

On the metro you would need to make one transfer to another line, so expect lots of stairs. A very wild guess would place the cab fare in the 20€ range.

Definitely a taxi or a bus if there is one going to your neighborhood.
Many bused depart from garde du Nord which means there are empty and there is space for your luggage. Bus 48 goes to left bank but not sure where it stops.

If you wish to go by bus, exit the station by the northeast door and board the 42. Get off at Ballard and then board the 88 [direction Cite Universitaire]. You can purchase tickets from the drivers.
This is your destination:

Thanks for the info. Is it OK to board buses with luggage at 4-5 pm Thursday? To transfer from 42 to 88, do I need to ask for a %26quot;transfer%26quot; ticket or would I need 2 tickets? It looks like 42 meets 88 first at Charles Michels, would it be better to change buses at end of the line for both at Hopital Pompidou? Thanks

How long the trip takes by the way? Any idea? Thanks

There are no transfer tickets. Its one ticket per bus ride. I would be inclined to take a taxi.

We enjoyed the metro very much, but would not have bothered with luggage (there were four of us). We arrived at about the same time and had to go clear across Paris and for the four of us it was $25 Euro. We got off the train, went straight to the taxi station, got right in and were at our hotel in no time at all. Glad we didn%26#39;t attempt buses or metro until we were settled and knew what we were doing.

On our first Paris visit we took the RER/Metro route and then walked a few blocks. The biggest hassle is the many, many stairs, and many stations do not have escalators! Never again. This trip we took a taxi. Well worth the money.
