I just drove to Italy from Paris yesterday ....I do this trip 6 or 7 times a year.
1) In France, the toll booths no longer accepted my American credit card. Big signs on the toll booths saying that they no longer accept many credit cards from other countries. So have a lot of cash with you...tolls from Paris to Italy boarder was over 65 Euro!
2) Saw flashes of light - like a photo being taken - I was driving about 10 km more than speed limit....so assume that there was some sort of photo radar in place.
Does anyone know what they do about these - if you don%26#39;t have a rental car and your car is registered in another country?
3) France has some of the best roads to drive on!

If you plot your route using www.viamichelin.com it will show you where all the static speed cameras are. What it will not show you are the mobile radar guns used by the gendarme. I believe that if you get caught on camera and your car is registered in another country you get away with it at the moment. I think they are working towards stopping this loophole. If you have hired the car the police will follow it up once they have been given your details by the car hire company. If you get caught by the gendarme then it is instant fine.
On the credit cards would it not accept your card at the automatic credit card booth or are you talking about the card being refused when you gave it to the attendant?

The card was not accepted by either...the toll person and the machine...only in France. Italy there was still no problem using my credit card.
The sign on the toll booths saying that some other nations credit cards were no longer accepted was new. I just drove back from Paris a few months ago and had no problems using my credit card.

Thank you for that information it could make things interesting this summer. I know at 24 hour automatic petrol stations they only take French cards but this is obviously new.
I%26#39;m lucky I have a telepeage, makes it even more worthwhile now.

They would also use the toll ticket as evidence of speeding, if you spent too little time for the distance travelled.
I once got stopped by gendarmarie on a country road for speeding, but was only given a verbal reprimand.

We%26#39;ve been really lucky - so far!!!! We have reached 120mph ( I don%26#39;t think that the defence of only doing 120; didn%26#39;t realise you meant km%26#39;s; would be allowed) on very quiet roads before now %26amp; usually do about 10km over the 130km allowed on some roads.
But.... we do slow right down in traffic %26amp; we often find a %26quot;pacemaker%26quot; who seems to know the roads %26amp; let him lead. %26amp; yes, we do use viamichelin for the static cameras.
Naughty, I know, but some of those long, straight, quiet roads just invite you to put your foot down %26amp; have some fun.
