Hiking Near Marseille

We are staying in Marseille for two weeks in July and would be interested in doing lots of hiking during our stay. We are interested in any recommendations for hiking that is somewhat close to Marseille (say within a couple of hours by public transportation (train/bus/walk). Thanks in advance for your assistance!

Have you heard of the calanques, the French mediterranian version of Fijold? You can start a research with that name but for a start :

The easiest (seems to me) : take a boat to Frioul Island and walk from the pier either to your (generally speaking) left or right. Calanques are smaller, hence, easier too.

Next easiest : Callelongue. Down part is you have to change city bus twice to get to the starting point but usually they are well connected and takes about 45 minutes to arrive at the starting point, small port. Difficulty low and a quick walk would take about 1 hour or so (+ you have to add how many hours spend sitting here and there admiring the view.)

Sugiton : Difficulty low to a bit more than that depending on the route you will choose. It takes 30 min bus ride from a stop on canebière street by the Vieux Port to Luminy, then you start walking. Basically you walk down to the rocky beach for about 1 hour or maybe more. There are several high observation points on the way sometimes with a bit of deviation. When you are there you will see them. There are also signs. This was my first calanque 3 years ago and the view was breathtaking. Since then I returned to Marseille (or Cassis) 5 times so far to do the same and different calanques. Don%26#39;t be put off by some length of cemented road when you get to closer to the beach.

Morgiou : from Rond Point de Prado bus Stop, take a bus for 30 minutes and at the end, start walking. Till Cap de Morgiou takes around 2 hours. Difficulty higher than Sugiton.

The followings are accpecible from Cassis.

Port-Miou 30 min.

Port Pin 1 hr

En-Vau 1h45

Times are for oneway (to get to the farthest point you can get) and very approximative.

In any case, to check the bus numbers, etc, visit the tourist office of Marseille on Canebière by the Vieux-Port. You should also ask them to make sure the routes to the calanques are open. Cassis has also a nice tourist office on the port.

And lastly here the photos I have taken so far, just to show off ;-)

They are from my trip of last December. That day I hiked on Sugiton again and the mistral was blowing so hard that you can see the water blow away high like smoke. You also see a few photos of Cap de Morgiou. I hiked on that Cap in January and last Easer.
