Cheapest rates for calls from France to US

I looked into this Return Call Service using my cell phone with French sim card, however rates are 34cents a minute and I think there might be cheaper options? And I was not sure if I incurred any fees using the cell phone with this service. I think not...

We will be all over France and one week in Italy and at some point I know we will want to phone home and touch base for a few minutes if not more often. I%26#39;d like to use the hotel phones but if cheaper could go and find a public phone.

Does anyone have some ideas? Thanks

Return Call service (also known as Call Back service) helps you save money on outgoing long distance phone calls when using your international cell phone abroad. Most wireless phone carriers around the world charge high airtime rates to make outgoing international phone calls from your cell phone, however they almost always offer free or cheap incoming call rates. Return Call service takes advantage of these low incoming call rates, to help you save money on your outgoing long distance calls.

When you sign up for Return Call service, you will be provided with a list of their local %26quot;Trigger Numbers%26quot; for every country around the world. When you are in your destination country, you can use your cell phone (with Local SIM card) to call the trigger number. A computer at the the Return Call service center will answer, and then you will simply hang up. A few moments later you will receive an incoming call from the Return Call service and be prompted to enter the Long Distance phone number that you would like to call.

If you%26#39;re taking a laptop and will have an internet connection, you can subscribe to Skype and make your calls back to the US for about 2 cents/minute. Voice quality is better than the phone.

totally with Truffaut.

Skype stays the cheapest. And if the person you call in the US has skype, it is completly free/

unfortunately too heavy to carry laptop w/ me! plus i dont own one.

but i%26#39;ve been hearing a lot about skype lately. friends in french polynesia use it to call (over internet). I will have to look into it. I think it support webcam feature too?

any other options? or is 34 cents a good rate? how about global calling cards available here? they work in france?

|||

34 cents sound a lot cheaper than the $1.29 per Cingular provides for calls from France to U.S. You probably should avoid hotel phones since most charge surcharges.

|||

You won%26#39;t incur any airtime charges using callback service in France or Italy, with a local (French or Italy repectively) SIM.

|||

no-name (i.e. other than AT%26amp;T, Sprint, etc.) global prepaid calling cards sold in North America may not work with payphones and local cell phones in Europe, as some countries(such as Italy, Germany) block access to the toll-free numbers these cards use.

Buy an international calling card with a pin number at a newstand, kiosk or tabac. Usually you get 400 minutes for 7.5 euros. This would be for use with a hotel phone but I%26#39;m not sure if they would charge you a fee. It%26#39;s still really inexpensive compared with renting a cellphone.

we bought a calling card from Fat Bike Tours and used it in phone booths. Worked great. Cost around $10.00 (sn)

thanks for input all

for the convenience of talking on phone anywhere i want, i think

i will go with return call service and pay 34 cents a minute!
