We will have an overnight layover in Paris on our way home from Italy in September. We arrive at about 7 PM and leave at about 11:30 the next morning. I have already booked a hotel that I believe is in a fairly central location, somewhat near the river, Eiffel Tower, etc. This will be our first time to Paris and I would like to find out what you would recommend for such a short period of time. We don%26#39;t plan to get much sleep that night! Is the river cruise worth the time or should we just walk and see the sights?

The Seine cruise is an excellent way to see Paris along the river; the buildings are illuminated at night. So my vote would be for a cruise, followed by a nice dinner on shore.

Bateaux Parisiens, located at the Eiffel Tower [facing the Seine to the right of the Pont de Alma] has one-hour cruises departing every half hour up to eleven PM.
The twinkling lights on the Eiffel Tower are lit for a few minutes on the hour.

Thanks for the information. Is the river cruise something that you have to book in advance? If so, does anyone happen to know a website where I can do that?

They take reservations for lunch and dinner cruises, but not sightseeing cruises as far as I know. I would just show up.

You don%26#39;t need to reserve in advance, but at the vedettesdeparis.com site you can get a discount coupon. That company has the most convenient dock, near Notre-Dame, but there are two other companies as well: Bateaux Mouches (largest boats) and Bateaux Parisians.

I just got back from Paris and absolutely loved the dinner cruise on Bateaux Parisienne. The food was wonderful and the cruise so romantic. There is a band on board playing traditional French music as well. I would vote for doing the dinner cruise and forgoing dinner on shore but it is expensive. We splurged because it was our anniversary.

we have several times had only a night someplace in transit like that -- the key to happiness is to limit what you do -- but choose somethihng unrushed -- a real taste of the town
if it were me in Paris, I would not do the boat trip but would grab a nice dinner at a bistrot -- then stroll down the Seine and around Notre Dame -- a wonderful sight at night --
we once had a similar layover in London -- we got fish and chips and saw a Gilbert and Sullivan play at the Savoy - their original theater
and in Rome -- we went to Trastevere to a tiny restaurant we had read about and strolled a bit
